Reaching the AFAR in Ethiopia
And you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the Earth... Acts 1:8

Grace Lutheran Church is joining with WorldVision and the Mekane Yesus Church to reach the Afar people through holistic evangelism balancing word and deed to make the world a better place by partnering with locals to bring literacy, sustainable agriculture, clean water, and basic health care to the region.
Pastor Dave Housholder recently returned from a trip to the Afar region

New Orleans Katrina Relief

Reaching the Afar people is our main missions focus, but we also have a heart for helping local needs. The damage caused by Katrina led our members to step up and literally be "the church" to those in need. Organized by a team at Westminster Lutheran Church of Hope, members of Grace Lutheran and Robinwood joined their effort to New Orleans from May 13th-20th where together we removed furniture, moldy walls, and basically gutted two homes while wearing protective suits in 95 F temperature. This was an amazing opportunity to help people in need and show that God is good, all the time!
Connect with Lutheran World Relief to schedule a trip down to the region where many homes are in need of gutting. Also, as time progresses, there will be a greater need for contractors to help in reconstruction.

World Mission Prayer League
In April and May, Karen Merkel, a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Sue Hutchins, from St. Luke Lutheran church in Mt. View, CA visited the work of the World Mission Prayer League in Afghanistan and Pakistan. On April 23rd, Karen and Sue were commissioned and sent out from Grace. At that service, a special offering was received in the amount of $4,000. The purpose of the offering was designated to buy prosthesis for Afghan men, women and children who have lost legs because they have stepped on land mines. Afghanistan is a country that has the more land mines than any other country in the world. There is a very active program of specialists coming in and looking for land mines and then detonating them, which is a very dangerous job. At least 100 Afghan people a month become maimed or seriously injured when they accidentally step on a land mine. Another very active program is teaching children how to identify a land mine. They are taught not to touch it and to report it's location. Several Afghan people have learned how to make leg prosthesis in the hospital shop. It costs only $30.00 to make one leg prosthesis. Just think of how many legs will be made with the gift from Grace! Karen Merkel says, "Thank you, very much, GLC." Scripture says, 'I was crippled, but now I can walk!' Your gift is making this possible for many Afghan people.
